Abstract:The human gut virome—the viral component of the microbiome—is predominantly composed of bacteriophages, viruses that infect bacteria. Through millions of years of co-evolution, these viruses may offer benefits to the host by influencing key metabolic and immunological processes. Advances in shotgun metagenome sequencing and computational analysis have unlocked novel biological insights, revealing associations between specific viral entities and various diseases. In the ongoing CRC Biome study nested within the Bowel Cancer Screening in Norway trial, we generated 18.3 billion metagenomic sequencing reads from 1380 Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) samples. Our computational analyses identified core viral constituents, characterized the diversity of viral taxa, and elucidated the virome’s metabolic potential and gene content. By mapping viral species and correlating their distribution with factors such as age, sex, dietary habits, and lifestyle, this study deepens our understanding of the virome’s role within the gut microbiome and its impact on human health.
